Sidewalk dining before Ripon council on Tuesday

Ripon businesses taking the on-street / sidewalk dining survey, based on the early returns, favored the semi-permanent decks on the street parking stalls for downtown restaurants.

The Ripon City Council recently rescinded an ordinance regarding outdoor dining within a public right-of-way while approving the amendments on sidewalk dining on public walkways.

At Tuesday’s monthly session, elected leaders could look at the newly revised sidewalk dining ordinance with the proposed application fee.

The open session begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 258 N. Wilma Ave.

A public hearing is also scheduled in consideration of the Planning Agency Fee Schedule amendment.

“It is a requirement that all sidewalk dining within the City of Ripon obtain a sidewalk dining permit in order to operate within city limits,” according to the staff report provided by Planning Director Ken Zuidervaart.

He added that all sidewalk dining permits will be valid for one calendar year, expiring on Dec. 31 of the year issued.

Businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic were the provided to operate outdoors under the temporary waivers, under emergency services, based on certain requirements of the Ripon Municipal Code.

The “Sidewalk Dining” ordinance adopted by Council at the Dec. 14 meeting will be effective Thursday, Jan. 13.

Other agenda items include:

  • Council discussing the water, sewer, garbage annual rate adjustment analysis that calls for implementing the full rate increases for water (2%), sewer (4%), and garbage (5%) enterprise funds of the approved 2020 5-year rate study.
  • Elected leaders looking to approve a resolution on roles and responsibilities of their appointed local and regional boards, commissions, task forces and committees for the upcoming year.
  • Council members authorizing and approving the purchase of computer servers, backup storage and associated hardware in order to bring the police department up to industry standards while doing likewise on the purchase of new dispatch console radios – to replace the old ones – and bringing in the fourth dispatch station into service.
