Ripon Christian’s Tameling repeats as TVL MVP

Mason Tameling has repeated as the Trans Valley League’s boys volleyball MVP, which also marks the third time he’s earned the honor after doing so his sophomore year in the Southern League.

Bound for NAIA powerhouse The Master’s University, Tameling led the Knights (12-0, 24-16 overall) to a seventh consecutive undefeated run in league play and a final-round appearance in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.

Armando Ayon of Ripon (8-4, 15-15) was awarded Most Outstanding Player, and Mark Peters of runner-up Big Valley Christian (10-2, 27-9) is Coach of the Year.

Tameling finished as one of the country’s most effective servers. He fired a section-high 92 aces, which is third most in the state and ninth most in the nation. He was also among the kill leaders with 456 (3.9 per set).

In 38 sets played in the TVL, Tameling accumulated 130 kills, 38 aces and 76 digs.

Ayon was the top six-rotation producer for the Indians. He compiled 82 kills, 20 blocks and 80 digs.

Ripon Christian totaled four all-league selections with three others receiving honorable mention.

Darren Van Groningen, a 6-foot-7 senior middle, tagged 66 kills in the Knights’ balanced attack in league play to go with a team-best 23 blocks.

Second-year sophomores Trevor Van Groningen (65 kills, 34 aces) and Grant Wentworth (64 kills and 27 aces) also made all-league.

Ripon also had three make honorable mention.

Joining Ayon on the All-TVL team for Ripon is 6-8 middle Trent Olmo (84 kills, 22 blocks)

Senior setter Daniel Lambdin, defensive specialist Ian Brown and senior setter Daniel Lambdin made honorable mention. Getting the honorable mention nod for Ripon were senior setter Cade Fullmer, outside hitter Gavin Garner and sophomore libero Hugo Garcia Martinez.
