DE LA CRUZ, ONE OF FARMWORKER MOVEMENT'S 1ST FEMALE LEADERS DIES FRESNO . (AP) — Jessie Lopez De La Cruz, a longtime leader in the national farmworker movement, has died. She was 93.

The United Farmworkers of America says De La Cruz died in Kingsburg, Calif., on Labor Day. She was one of the union's first female members and organizers in the Fresno area.

De La Cruz organized workers in the fields, participated in grape boycotts and testified on outlawing the short-handled hoe, which required workers to bend over at the waist for the entire day.

She also worked with the UFW in campaigns across the state and with the union Cesar Chavez at his office at La Paz in Keene. She also became a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Born in Anahei., she became part of the UFW in her 40s, after Chavez visited her Parlier home to speak with farmworkers about forming a union and invited her to join.

POLICE: WOMAN ATTACKS EX'S SLEEPING 8-YEAR-OLD SON: LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Police in Maryland say a woman broke into her ex-boyfriend's home and tried to bludgeon his sleeping 8-year-old son to death.

Prince George's County police said Tuesday that 26-year-old Helen Marie Newsome broke into the home in Landover over the weekend. After hiding for more than 12 hours until the boy's father went to work Saturday morning, police say Newsome covered the boy's head with a pillow and beat him with a dumbbell weight. But the boy fought back and managed to escape to a neighbor's home.

Newsome jumped out a window, but police say she was arrested nearby.

The boy's father had recently broken up with Newsome. She is charged with first-degree attempted murder.

TEEN DEAD, MORE HURT IN TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL STABBING: SPRING, Texas (AP) — A fight inside a Houston-area high school escalated into a series of stabbings Wednesday that left a 17-year-old student dead and three others wounded, sheriff's officials said.

The stabbings happened during a fight between several students in a school corridor. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said 17-year-old student Luis Alonzo Alfaro pulled a knife during the fight and fatally stabbed one student and wounded three others.

Alfaro admitted to the stabbing under questioning by sheriff's homicide detectives and was charged with murder, the Sheriff's Office said in a statement released Wednesday evening.

Sheriff's spokesman Alan Bernstein referred queries about whether Alfaro had an attorney to the district clerk's website, which had not been updated as of Wednesday night. Alfaro also was not yet listed in the jail's booking system.

Authorities provided few details on what may have led to the fight, and no other information was available on the teenager who was killed.
