VETERAN DIES WAITING FOR AMBULANCE IN VA HOSPITAL: ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A veteran who collapsed in an Albuquerque Veteran Affairs hospital cafeteria — 500 yards from the emergency room — died after waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance, officials confirmed Thursday.
It took a half an hour for the ambulance to be dispatched and take the man from one building to the other, which is about a five-minute walk, officials at the hospital said.
Kirtland Air Force Medical Group personnel performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, VA spokeswoman Sonja Brown said.
Staff followed policy in calling 911 when the man collapsed on Monday, she said. “Our policy is under expedited review,” Brown said.
PLANE RETURNS TO SEATTLE WITH CHANTING PASSENGER: SEATTLE (AP) — Officials say a man who was loudly chanting on an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Hawaii made the other passengers uncomfortable and prompted the crew to return and drop him off with law enforcement at Sea-Tac Airport.
Airlines spokeswoman Nancy Trott says the captain made the right decision for safety Wednesday night.
Trott says the man was removed without incident about 9:30 p.m. Flight 877 resumed with 178 passengers and landed at 1:16 a.m. local time Thursday at Kona.
Trott didn’t know what the man was chanting or why. She says the crew tried to reason with him without success.
Sea-Tac spokesman Perry Cooper says the man was not arrested. He was taken back to the terminal with the suggestion he rebook his travels on another carrier.
TENNESSEE MAN CLAIMS $259 MILLION POWERBALL PRIZE: NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A man with a winning $259 million Powerball ticket claimed what officials are calling the largest jackpot ever won in Tennessee, and says he plans to use most of the money to support the performing arts.
Roy Cockrum of Knoxville appeared Thursday at the Tennessee Lottery headquarters in Nashville to claim the prize. He plans to accept a lump sum payment of $115 million.
Cockrum, 58, bought the ticket at a Kroger store in Knoxville on June 11. Before becoming a millionaire, he worked for 20 years as an actor and stage manager for theater and TV productions.
POLICE: MAN SHOT TODDLER TO TORTURE HER DAD: INKSTER, Mich. (AP) — A man accused of killing a 2-year-old Detroit-area girl shot her in front of her father to torture him, state police said Thursday.
The comments from Lt. Michael Shaw came after Raymone Jackson, 24, of Inkster, appeared in court on a first-degree murder charge and was sent back to jail with no bond.
“The child was the intended target,” Shaw told reporters outside court. “He was going to kill the child in front of this guy and then kill him afterward so that it would be the last thing he sees.”
The girl was shot in the head Tuesday while on the porch of an Inkster home. Inkster police believe it was retaliation for a shooting in April.
Kamiya’s father, Ken French, 34, and a family friend, 12-year-old Chelsea Lancaster, were also shot and are in a hospital.
FACEBOOK CUTS, WOMAN RESTORES GAME TROPHY PHOTOS: DALLAS (AP) — Facebook has deleted some big game trophy photos posted by a Texas Tech cheerleader, saying they violated its standards.
However, 19-year-old Kendall Jones later shared a Fox News Channel montage of the deleted photos of rhinos, elephants, lions and leopards killed or tranquilized.
Jones has received criticism and support online after posting the pictures of herself in Africa. Jones says on her public Facebook page that the hunts are legal.
