SAN DIEGO (AP) — A rampaging pack of dogs roamed a neighborhood early Tuesday, attacking and injuring three people before they charged a police officer and were shot, authorities said.

The attacks occurred in the Bay Terraces neighborhood, police said.

A 78-year-old retired Navy chief was bitten on the face and arm when he went outside to get a newspaper. He was taken to a hospital with minor to moderate wounds, U-T San Diego reported. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Norma Williams, 60, was walking to church when three pit bulls surrounded her, tore her pants and bit her ankle.

“Luckily, I have the umbrella and tried to stop them — but my umbrella broke,” she said.

She climbed over a neighbor’s fence to escape. “I’m so scared,” Williams said.

Michael Ward, 19, said he heard Williams screaming and went to help. “When I saw the dogs, they immediately came after me,” Ward told the station.

The dogs bit Ward on his side and thigh before he retreated to his house.

“I was like, ‘I’ve got to get out of here,’ “ he told U-T San Diego. “They went pretty fast, ran after me, jumped on me. I closed the door behind me real fast.”

When a police officer arrived, the dogs charged toward him, and he shot all three animals.

“An officer had his gun drawn and a dog was in the gutter,” neighbor Carolyn Law said told the newspaper. “Then I saw the dog get up. That was shocking. That dog was Cujo. The officer shot him one more time, and it was still standing, then he shot it one more time and it fell.”

One of the dogs died instantly; the officer killed another dog because it was badly injured and suffering; and the third was euthanized by a veterinarian, authorities said.

The dogs had no identification tags or microchips, and the owner had not come forward, Lt. Kalani Hudson of the San Diego County Department of Animal Services told the newspaper.
