Asparagus Festival calls it quits

STOCKTON (AP) — Organizers of Stockton’s Asparagus Festival say they’re calling it quits after 29 years.

A 10-member board voted unanimously on Tuesday to dissolve the annual celebration held in downtown Stockton, which featured live music, deep-fried asparagus and an asparagus-eating competition.

Attendance dropped by nearly half this year. Two years ago, the festival attracted 104,000 people, but this year just 55,000 turned out.

The Asparagus Festival raised thousands of dollars each year for local charities.

Stockton is struggling to exit bankruptcy, which forced the festival to do with less help from City Hall.
