What are you doing
this weekend?

Take a walk – an art walk! Plenty of cities in the Central Valley are on Friday night transforming themselves into supportive art communities. The Summer ArtSplash is held in Stockton for the fourth year and takes place second Friday of May through October in downtown Stockton at various venues such as Mexican Heritage Center or San Joaquin Pride Center (more info about the event at http://www.visitstockton.org/events). You can also visit Lodi and participate in the Lodi Art Hop where the local businesses and venues display art by local artists. Sounds like fun!

Are you craving a fun night out with friends and good music, but the sound they nowadays call “popular music” is simply annoying? Then this event is definitely for you! The Mega Jam at Weber Point is “the premier Central Valley old school music festival” and on Saturday, July 11, performers like Rose Royce, Evelyn Champagne King, Lakeside, Mellow Man Ace and Latin Magic Band will entertain you at Weber Point in Downtown Stockton. There will also be a car show with judges and trophies. If you want to splurge, get a VIP ticket which includes conveniently located restrooms. Now that’s a selling point for a music festival!

Frida Kahlo would have celebrated her 108th birthday this Monday and to celebrate her big day, The Latino Center of Art and Culture (2700 Front Street, Sacramento) decided to hold a Dress Like Frida competition in conjunction with the opening of the La Fiesta de Frida: An Exhibition of Chicano Art show. Dress like your best Frida impersonation; don’t forget about a big, colorful skirt and a unibrow. There will be prizes given in three categories, “Best Frida,” “Best Traditional,” and “Best in Drag.” Winner will receive a $100 prize! But watch out, a colorful costume will not be enough. The judges will evaluate the contestants on how they capture the essence of Frida. The gallery opens on Saturday, July 11, at 1 p.m. and the contest begins at 4.
