Amos Cady was impactful in all three phases Friday at Calaveras’ Frank Meyer Field. The host Red Hawks (1-2) never led but stayed in the fight after going down 14-0 in the first quarter, scoring 14 unanswered in the second to tie it.
That’s when Cady tilted the tide back in the Knights’ favor, returning a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown in the closing seconds of the half. Josiah Van Vliet came up with an interception on Calaveras’ opening drive of the second half, which set up quarterback Mason Tameling’s 4-yard touchdown scamper that redoubled the advantage.
Tameling ended with two rushing touchdowns, while completing 10 of 16 passes for 115 yards and a 26-yard touchdown connection with Cady, who totaled 76 yards from scrimmage. Defensively, the free safety recorded 12 tackles and picked off a pass.
Lushen Sanders contributed a short-yardage touchdown run, and Aaron Van Hofwegen converted a 32-yard field goal and was a perfect 5-for-5 on point-after kicks. Hofwegen was also RC’s leading tackler with 13. Patrick Cory had a sack.
The Knights (3-0) improved to 6-0 all-time against Calaveras and welcome Mesa Verde (1-1) of Citrus Heights this Friday for their final tune-up before Trans Valley League play.
