Two area standouts will look to help the North maintain its dominance in the 40th Annual Lions All-Star Game.

Rosters for the North and South squads were announced Tuesday, which include 2012 Manteca Bulletin All-Area MVP Anthony Cota of Sierra and Manteca High lineman Daniel Clemons. The game is scheduled for Saturday, June 15 with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Modesto Junior College. Coaches and players selected to compete in one of California’s oldest high school all-star football events will be introduced in a banquet this Saturday at Italian Athletic Club in Stockton.

Cota broke single-game, single-season and career rushing records in his third and final season at Sierra last fall. He produced 1,966 yards and 38 touchdowns while leading the Timberwolves to a 10-2 record and a second-round appearance in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound juggernaut was voted the Valley Oak League’s Offensive Player of the Year and earned honorable mention for the All-Sac-Joaquin Section Team.

Clemons was named Most Valuable Lineman for Manteca (6-5). He was the starting center on offense and recorded 42 tackles and three sacks on defense.

Last year, Sierra grad Zach Penerian, Ripon Christian’s James Vander Schaaf and Lathrop resident Jaime Christopherson, who prepped at St. Mary’s, helped the North win, 30-0. It was the North’s eighth victory in the last nine years, and it stretched its all-time series lead to 24-14-1.

The North team, coached by Calaveras’ Jason Weatherby, is comprised of players hailing from Sac-Joaquin and Calaveras counties and. Merced coach Kevin Swartwood leads the South, which is represented by Stanislaus and Merced county schools.
