Cowan leads EU to 7th-place finish in Sierra golf tourney

East Union led local schools in the Sierra Invitational with a seventh-place finish Wednesday at Manteca Park Golf Course. 

Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove earned the championship in the 19-team tournament, scoring a 451 — three better than Valley Oak League leader Oakdale. East Union finished with a 496. The Lancers was the 2015 runner-up and captured the event’s seven previous titles.

Low medalist was Madeline Zunino of Lincoln with a 3-over 75. Her teammate, Anitra Khoth, took second with a 77.

East Union’s Natalie Cowan took seventh individually with a solid 84. Kendra Campbell (92), Hailey Leonard (103), Pressley Graham (108) and Kennedy Goodnough (109) also scored for the Lancers.

Tournament host Sierra ended up with a 569 behind Bryanna Gavino’s 106. Hailey Looney (110), Kaitlun Looney (113), Legacy Barnes (117) and Aubrey White (123) followed.

Manteca finished with a 573 and was led by Kylee Eberle’s 102. Other contributing Buffaloes are Haighley Kissee (111), Sierra Martinez (113), Bella Gonzales (119) and Kaitlyn Funsch (128).

Valley Oak League

MODESTO — Sierra’s defending champion boys and girls varsity teams continued their march to another title, but a legitimate challenger has emerged to push the girls in the final meet.

Oakdale edged out the Lady Timberwolves 26-29 in the second cluster meet held at Tuolumne Regional Park on Wednesday, putting both squads at 12-2 heading into the VOL Championships set for Oct. 26 at Eagal Lakes in Tracy. Sierra sophomore Megan Oblin put forth another dominant effort, turning in the top overall time of 19 minutes, 38 seconds. Oakdale’s Karina Prado (19:56), Weston Ranch’s Iris Carrillo (20:13), East Union’s Kelley Higginson (20:35) and Sierra’s Savannah Verschuur (20:46) rounded out the top five.

The Sierra boys had six runners finish in the top 10: Jesse Hurtado (second, 17:01), Arish Balasubramaniam (third, 17:07), Lionel Orhiere (fourth, 17:14), Trevor Ryan (fifth, 17:19), Sabas Montes (ninth, 17:36) and Frankie Leyva (10th, 17:36). Tomas Huerta of Weston Ranch won the race in 17:01.

Manteca 8, East Union 1

Manteca (9-0, 11-1 overall) hosts Sierra today in a VOL showdown between the top two teams after smashing its other cross-town rival Wednesday.

No. 4 singles player Stephanie Mercado and No. 1 doubles Rav Dhillon and Navina Mann rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories. Other singles victories came from Koryn Menasco (6-2, 6-3), Julia Tang (6-1, 6-1), Gladis Sandoval (6-2, 6-0) and Makenna Condit (6-1, 6-0). Julianne Eavenson and Noeli Mercado won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3. Monica Lazono and Prerna Singh capped scoring with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Top singles player Fuko Inoue accounted for East Union’s lone point with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Taylor Corona.
