East Union’s volleyball team took the better-late-than-never approach in its Valley Oak League match with Weston Ranch Friday.

After dropping the first game, the Lancers nearly blew sizable leads in the second and third but held on to win it in four. Game scores were: 19-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-12.

They were able to finish off the visiting Cougars (0-2, 1-5 overall) with dominant serving. They amassed 23 aces and were led by Madison Hoffman’s eight, Alex Scopas’ six and Dani Herrera five. Still, East Union (1-1, 4-4) could have made it a lot easier on itself.

In Game 2, the Lancers built a 20-7 cushion before giving up nine straight points. And in the third set, the Cougars managed to take a 24-23 edge despite falling behind 21-14.

“We were cruising along, but in both cases we just got into a stretch where we couldn’t get a sideout,” EU coach Rich Posz said. “That’s something we are still working on. We were in control in the fourth game, so we showed that we are capable of doing that.”

Jill Costa led the attack with seven kills, and Kayla Lamont finished with four digs.

Lathrop 3, Oakdale 0

Oakdale left Lathrop in a hurry with a commanding 25-9, 25-14, 25-13 win in the VOL opener on Wednesday.

Monica Brambila had 12 assists, Loreal Taylor seven blocks, Manraj Kaur two aces and four assists, Joeclyn Aranda five blocks and three kills for the Spartans (0-1, 1-5).
