A 3-pointer at the end of regulation looked like the shot that would usher senior Morgan Hulsebosch into hero status, but Emoni Wilson and the Weston Ranch Cougars had other plans in a 68-64 overtime win Tuesday over East Union High.
Wilson sank a pair of free throws to open the overtime period before promptly nailing a 3-pointer from the right-corner to give the Cougars a lead in the bonus period they wouldn’t squander. Timnesha Wilson would handle the rest, scoring four of her game-high 27 points in the game’s final minute.
“Emoni hit the big three to put us up by five,” Cougars head coach Chris Bauer said. “That is something that we’ve wanted to get her more involved in. She missed a couple early in the game, so I told her to attack the rim the next few times.
“When she got the look in overtime, they didn’t know what to do.”
Wilson would finish with 15, all coming in the second half, and played the supplement role to Timnesha Wilson’s standout performance. The senior point guard scored early and often, giving the Lancer defense a complicated situation they simply could not solve.
“I just know that (Timnesha) Wilson was a heck of a player tonight,” East Union head coach Jim Agostini said. “The style was just with her, she demands a lot of respect and attention out of defenses.
“We tried different looks and just could not get it done.”
The game was relatively close throughout, with East Union building the biggest lead late in the second period when they were up 31-24. Lexy Posz ignited that rally for the Lancers, scoring on three consecutive trips to build the lead.
Weston Ranch responded with Timnesha Wilson and Santasia McClearn combining for eight unanswered to pull Weston Ranch within a basket heading into halftime. McClearn would continue with contributions in the second half, finishing in double-digits with 10 and playing a huge roll on the glass for the Cougars, pulling down nine rebounds.
“To me, Santasia played really good,” Timnesha Wilson said. “This was undoubtedly one of her best games. She actually had to step up when Jasmine (Strane) had fouled out. I told her to just play hard and to not play the scoreboard just play the game.
“And that is exactly what she went out and did.”
Strane fouled out with 1:45 left in regulation, after shoving a Lancer player after a tussle for a loose rebound. The shove earned the Lancers a pair of free throws, both of which Hulsebosch drained, putting East Union on top 55-54. Emoni Wilson calmly followed suite with a 3-pointer of her own, prefacing her big shot antics of the overtime period.
“I felt that I would have to step a lot down the stretch,” Emoni Wilson said. “Strane had fouled out, so I felt I had to be better on the boards and continue to shoot until I made some.
“I had a lot of confidence in my shot; I practiced a lot shooting today and I felt good.”
Shalane Jackson had six points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, while teammate Hulsebosch added 13. Posz finished with 10 points and Briona Fontenot led the Lancers with 23, but went without a basket from midway through the fourth until late in overtime.
Both clubs will be on the court Thursday, with the Lancers traveling to see the Manteca Buffaloes and Weston Ranch welcoming the Sierra Timberwolves.
