Lancers leave Sonora with win

For a brief moment even the East Union boys basketball team may have had some doubt, but trailing by 18 in the third quarter East Union responded, putting together a 65-62 come-from-behind victory Friday in Valley Oak League play.

The Lancers (8-4 VOL, 14-9 overall) refused to lay down, chipping away at Sonora’s lead in the fourth quarter, by outscoring the Wildcats 29-13 in the game’s final period.

“We started the game off well,” Lancer head coach Brett Lewis said. “We just missed some good looks and didn’t really capitalize on what they were giving us. In the final period we would not give up, every player on our team continued to fight for this win.”

The Lancers trailed Sonora in the Sac-Joaquin Section power ratings coming into the week but strung together a pair of impressive wins that will lift the Lancers in the polls and with their postseason aspirations.

TeeJay Gordon led all scorers with 24 points, sinking a game-high six 3-pointers, while teammate Wayne Cheung finished with 14 points. Cheung was injured late in the fourth quarter making a breakaway layup to chop Sonora’s double-digit lead to two.

Robert Vaughn chipped in with 10 and Jordan Kron added eight points in thew win. Brandon Cline sank a pair of 3-pointers, finishing with six points. The Lancers will try and parlay the huge road victory into momentum to close out the VOL season.

“Sonora was ahead of us in the standings and we helped ourselves by getting two wins, especially against a team that was ahead of us,” Lewis said. “Hopefully, we can climb a few more spots and use this momentum for a couple of huge games next week.”

The Lancers will meet up with Weston Ranch Wednesday and close out VOL play against the Manteca Buffaloes Friday. They travel to Stockton for the Cougars and play host to the Buffaloes in the season finale.

Oakdale 53, Manteca 49
Manteca opened the contest looking the part, outscoring host Oakdale (5-7, 14-11) 20-12 in the first quarter, yet that effort wouldn’t last in another Buffaloes VOL loss.

Manteca (5-7, 8-15) went ice cold in the second quarter, putting up just four points as the Mustangs would find their stride. The Buffaloes scored 20 points in the game’s first five minutes, and then reeled off an eight-minute stretch where they could not score a single point.

“Obviously the guys are disappointed in the loss,” Manteca head coach Dave Asuncion said. “But the kids definitely want to finish out the season on a high note.

“We shouldn’t need a pre-game speech to get them pumped up for this week.”

E.J. Godfrey paced Manteca with 28 points, 11 coming in the opening period.

The Buffaloes will close out the season hosting Sierra Wednesday followed by the season finale against East Union at home.
