Visibly frustrated, at times, Hailie Kim was not pleased with her effort in the Valley Oak League Tournament singles final Thursday at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.

She won 6-3, 6-0 against Oakdale junior Riley Avila, the defending champion.

“I was really nervous in the beginning,” Kim said. “I couldn’t find my rhythm at all the whole first set. I was not doing that great. I feel like the last two times I played her, I definitely had a lot more confidence and played a lot better.”

Kim is now 23-0 in her impressive freshman campaign, but she is not basking in any of her achievements yet, with the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament and SJS Division III team playoffs coming up.

She won’t be headed to the individual tournament at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club alone, as teammates Rae Limbago and Shreya Raman are also making the trip to Roseville as a doubles team on Nov. 6.

“I definitely want to try a lot harder and play a lot better, but I want to focus on my mentality next week, since I kind of broke down today,” Kim said. “My team definitely helped me out with that, especially my coaches.”

Limbago and Raman qualified knocking off Patterson’s Violet Tongson and Elyse Wong 6-0, 6-0 in the third-place match.

The top-seeded duo of Sehejj Sondh and Vivian Zhang defeated Ishita Ahellya and Alicia Rawat in the all-Mountain House final. Limbago-Raman lost to the champions 2-6, 5-7 in the semifinals.

East Union’s Samantha Escamilla and Jaklyn Virelas are the only other local team to make it to the quarterfinals. The Lancers opened with an 8-5 win over Patterson’s Johanna Amezquita and Angel Mulumba before getting eliminated by Ahellya-Rawat, 8-0.

It will be a busy week ahead for the Buffaloes. Seeded fifth, they start the team playoffs on Monday at No. 4 Merced. Kim looks forward to her first experience of postseason play.

“That is going to be so much fun,” Kim said. “I just love my team so much.”
