ROUNDUP: Knights drop NorCal volleyball opener; Ripon girls doubles take 2nd in section

The Ripon Christian boys volleyball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday after losing to top-seeded Santa Cruz 18-25, 17-25, 14-25 in the first round of the NorCal Division III playoffs.

The defeat marks the end of a stellar four-year varsity career for senior outside hitter Mason Tameling, who will continue playing for NAIA powerhouse The Master’s University. He tallied six kills, two blocks and three digs.

The eighth-seeded Knights (24-16) lose four seniors in all. Included are middle blocker Darren Van Groningen (five kills, three blocks) and setter Daniel Lambdin (16 assists, two blocks). Junior libero Ian Brown contributed with six digs and three assists.

Santa Cruz (26-13) will face No. 4 Beyer in the NorCal semifinals on Thursday.

COED TENNIS

Sac-Joaquin Section Coed Tournament

Ripon’s Alyssa Lan and Sophia Douglas faced familiar foes in the girls doubles final Tuesday at Oak Park Tennis Center.

After getting past Riverbank’s Isa Fernandez and Noemy Torres in the semifinals, the Lan-Douglas tandem earned a rematch against Orestimba’s Mirella Fregoso and Sofiah Ramirez. Both matches ended in third sets and in favor of Orestimba. This time, Fregoso and Ramirez prevailed, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Ripon Christian’s mixed doubles pair of Kora Harris and Derek Meester finished in fourth place. They lost their semifinal to Lindhurst’s Kenneith Yang and Hope Xiong, 5-7, 4-6. The two Knights then met Trans Valley League rival Nathan Rose and Emma Rangel of Escalon, falling 7-10.
