TENNIS: Ripon, RC doubles teams advance to SJS tourney semis

Two doubles teams from local schools advanced to the second day of the Sac-Joaquin Section Coed Individual Tournament.

Returning to Oak Park Tennis Center in Stockton today are Ripon’s all-girls tandem of Alyssa Lan and Sophia Douglas and Ripon Christian’s mixed pairing of Kora Harris and Derek Meester. Both teams won two matches on Monday to qualify for the semifinals.

Also competing Monday were River Islands’ Sai Nagavarapu and Brookelyn Betschart of Ripon. They made it to the section tourney as singles competitors and were eliminated in the second round.

Lan and Douglas opened with a 6-3, 6-0 sweep of Turlock Christian’s Sydney Mohr and Riley Heidman. In the quarterfinals, they edged out Amador’s Mara LaPilusa and Lauryn Kiekhaefer, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4. Lan and Douglas square off with Jeancarlo Torres and Noemy Torres of Mother Lode League champion Riverbank today in the semifinals.

Harris and Meester blanked Delhi’s Elizabeth Contreras and Daniel Alvarez 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and took out Ashton Guiraud and Monika Chang-Mazur from Pioneer Valley League champion Colfax in the quarters.

Betschart defeated Turlock Christian’s Claire Betts 6-3, 6-4 before dropping a 2-6, 0-6 decision to Colfax’s Mia Toy.

Nagavarapu took care of Oscar Vergael of Gustine 6-1, 6-2 in the boys singles tourney but was knocked off by Dixon’s Makani Gentry, 3-6, 0-6.

The competition resumes with the semifinals this morning at 10.
