Wohle has been told for much of his life that he’s fast.
He is just now realizing how fast he really is.
The Ripon junior played a big role in the Indians repeating as Sac-Joaquin Section Division V champions last Saturday at Sacramento City College. They edged out Trans Valley League rival Hughson by 1 ½ points, and it took a big-time effort their standout sprinter get ahead.
He was part of three first-place finishes and a second.
“It’s pretty awesome to be part of that,” Wohle said. “Getting to win with the guys on the track in the 4x100 and 4x400 was fun, and somehow winning the section championship for Division V by a point-and-half felt great.”
Wohle began running track his freshman year, but he did not begin to take it seriously until last summer.
“I trained a lot at MJC (Modesto Junior College), which helped me a lot for my junior year,” Wohle said. “People in general have been saying that I’m fast, I just did not realize I was that fast. My friends and family definitely pushed me to try harder in track, because it’s what I’m good at. I also thank all of my coaches for helping me with a lot of little techniques that have helped me get further in my track career.”
Wohle already has one school record and is making a charge at another. He set the new 200-meter record during a Trans Valley League dual meet against Escalon on April 22, winning in 22.36 seconds.
On Saturday, he sprinted to a personal best 400 time of 49.80, which was good for a top-10 overall mark across the five divisional heats and a berth to the SJS Masters Finals. The Masters meet is this Saturday at Folsom High, and he’s among the few athletes from the area who will have a chance to qualify for state.
“I had no idea I’d be able to do this,” Wohle said. “It’s the thought you put into it, the mentality when you’re running. When I first started running the 400, it was stressful and I was tired after every race, but now, I’m trying to push through to the end and that’s what got me to Masters.”
Also at divisionals, Wohle finished as the 200 runner-up in 22.43 seconds and was on the winning 4x100 (43.42) and 4x400 (3:33.80). Although he did not qualify for Masters in these events, he’ll get to just focus on the 400 this week.”
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Wohle said. “I’ve never raced against people in the 47s and 48s, so it’s going to be fun.”
