Weston Ranch scored 31 points in the second quarter on its way to an 81-57 walloping of first-year varsity Kimball High in Tracy Friday.
The win assures that the Cougars (12-0, 22-2 overall) will have the Valley Oak League championship — the third in the program’s seventh varsity season — all to themselves with big games still coming up against East Union and Sierra.
It could be a start to a multi-year championship run for Weston Ranch, which has three sophomores and a junior in its starting lineup.
“The kids worked hard all season,” said Ryan Bono, who earned his first title in his third year as Weston Ranch’s varsity coach. “They set the goal of winning the championship, and for them to go out and achieve it you have to give the young team credit.”
Junior guard Andre Beard churned out 19 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead the way. Melvin Allen, the lone senior among the starters, chipped in 13 points and five assists. Sophomores Zerrion Payton (13 points) and Dylan Alexander (10 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) also left their mark.
Devonte Price had 11 points for Kimball (2-10, 9-16).
With the outright title secured, Weston Ranch aims to finish the VOL season undefeated while maintaining its high position in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-III playoff power ratings. The Cougars are currently No. 4.
“I tell the kids to never be satisfied,” Bono said. “Just because we have the championship clinched, it doesn’t mean we can settle. We have to get back to work Monday and prepare for two good teams next week.”
