Ripon upsets 1st-place Ripon Christian

Ripon eked out a 5-4 win over Ripon Christian in Trans-Valley League coed tennis Thursday at the Ripon Community Center, handing the Knights their first loss of the season.

The marquee match of the day was the girls No. 1 singles where Ripon’s Brookelyn Betschart edged Ripon Christian’s Tatum Sonke 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9).

The Knights took the other three singles matches, with Alton Mensonides downing Matthew Tharakan in No. 1 boys 6-0, 6-0; Derek Meester defeating Joseph Tharakan 6-0, 6-0 and Kora Harris downed Lily Meyer 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 girls.

The Indians (6-5 TVL) won four of five doubles matches.

Max Ferral and Emilio Machado-Perez defeated Emmitt Van Laar and Braden Schaapman in No. 1 boys, 6-3, 6-0. Sophie Douglas-Alyssa Lan downed Annika Jung-Sophia Cheney in No. 1 girls, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Abby Douglas and Molly Berger defeated Natalie Mensonides and Emmry Van Gronigen 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 in No. 2 girls. Santiago Hernandez and Emiley Wang downed Micah Blackmon and Natalie Thompson in mixed doubles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The lone doubles victory for the Knights (9-1) was at boys No. 2 with Jack Schaapman-Evan Pryor defeating Jordan Sandoval-Nate Denhart 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Ripon next hosts Orestimba today, while Ripon Christian welcomes River Islands.
