Union Road station handled 31% of 11,582 calls to fire department in 2025

Thirty-one percent of the Manteca Fire Department’s 11,582 calls for service in 2025 were handed by Station 2 on Union Road.

The 3,591 calls handled by the engine company housed at the headquarters station underscores the municipal effort to build Manteca’s sixth fire station in southwest Manteca.

Call data is part of the update on fire department operations Fire Chief Steve Islas is presenting Thursday to the Public Safety Sales Tax Oversight Committee meeting at 5 p.m. at the Civic Center council chambers.

The half cent sales tax passed by voters in 2006 generated $10.5 million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.

Eighteen, or a third, of the city’s 54 firefighters are funded by Measure M.

The department was able to add the last nine of the 54 firefighter positions with the help of a $2.5 million Federal Emergency Management Agency award through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.

The grant will help pay for the three positions over a three-year period. The city’s share is being covered by the Measure Q three-quarter cent sales tax passed in November 2024.

The nine firefighters are staffing an engine company at the Union Road station until the sixth fire station is built.

In his report Islas also notes the department:

*Has taken delivery of two new fire engines, allowing the retirement of several reserve units that had remained in extended service.

*Is working toward transitioning from Basic Life Support (BLS) to Advanced Life Support (ALS) delivery, which will significantly enhance pre-hospital emergency medical care.

*Is undertaking efforts to improve the City’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating through targeted investments in staffing, training, and infrastructure.

*Has completed a comprehensive Standards of Coverage analysis, along with an updated Strategic Plan and Community Risk Assessment. The documents will guide future operational planning, resource allocation, and service delivery improvements.
