The Spreckels Park Red Sox avenged their lone loss of the season on Monday, erupting for five runs in the third inning and not looking back in a 13-3 five-inning win over the Manteca Rays in the District 67 Major League Tournament of Champions final at Gillen Field.
Manteca extended the championship round another day after downing the Red Sox on Sunday, 6-4.
“We took it pretty good yesterday,” Red Sox coach Josh Watkins said. “But the boys came back today and fought a hard one.
“The boys are great boys on both teams and our boys came back and they played to win today.”
Reid Vang belted a two-RBI single in the Spreckels Park fifth, scoring Sean Romo and Ace Midulla (2 for 4, RBI, two runs). Jayden Shortridge (3 for 3, RBI double, two runs) singled in Vang, Edmund Townsend came in on a Josiah Watkins groundout and David Wegner singled in Shortridge.
The Red sox had a five-run inning in the fifth as well highlighted by Shortridge’s double, and an RBI single by Midulla, scoring Silas Nguyen.
Townsend pitched into the fifth, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out six.
The Rays got two runs in the first and one in the second. Marcus Aldridge reached on a fielder’s choice in the first and scored on an error off the bat of Dennis Huber. Derek Anthony singled and eventually stole home. Julien Rodriguez walked to lead off the Manteca second and came in when Lorenzo Talavera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
