Sierra’s girls golf team earned a berth to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Tournament on Tuesday after placing third in the Valley Oak League Championships at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi.
Oakdale repeats as league champ, running away 46 points in the overall standings. The Mustangs scored a 437 in the VOL finale and were led by low medalist in MVP Tori Blank, who carded a 4-over 76. Sierra’s Mikaella Manto and East Union’s Ashley Trinidad finished in a second-place tie with 78s and made the All-VOL team. Six of the nine all-league winners hail from Oakdale.
East Union finished second in the tourney with 570 points, but it was not enough to catch Sierra in the season standings. Sierra totaled a 591 score on Tuesday and finished with 26 points in the standings, edging out East Union’s 22 for the third and final qualifying spot for divisionals.
Six individuals not part of the three qualifying teams also advance. Kimball finished as the overall league runner-up with 34 points and will join Oakdale and Sierra at Paradise Valley Golf Course in Fairfield next Monday, Oct. 25.
Brittney Barrington took sixth in the league finale with an 85 and will accompany fellow Lancer Trinidad at the D-III tourney. Mohrgen Kissee (14th, 106) and Emalyne Lundbom (16th, 111), both of Manteca, are also headed to the divisional.
For Sierra, Julia Erdman took 10th with a 103, Anna Dickinson was 17th with a 115, Marissa Alvarez 27th with a 145 and Sydney Ladrido 30th with a 149.
WAC Championships
Lathrop’s girls golfers made program history by clinching their spot in the SJS Division IV Tournament.
The Spartans took second in the Western Athletic Conference final Tuesday at Manteca Park Golf Course with a team score of 594. Mountain House is the league champion.
Leading the way for Lathrop was Abigail Bautista, who placed third individually with a 98. Lorelai Kremerskotter contributed a 118, and Nalani Kimbro a 121. Jordan Mabutas, Jocelyn Baugh and Phalina Nim filled out the rest of the Spartans’ roster.
The SJS Division IV Tournament is next Monday at Swenson Park Golf Course in Stockton.
GIRLS TENNIS
Sierra 9, Kimball 0
The Timberwolves (9-2 VOL) quickly vanquished their visitors from Tracy, getting 6-0, 6-0 shutouts from No. 2 singles Victoria Zellner, No, 3 Tanya Sharma, No. 4 Brisa Gonzalez, No. 2 doubles Grace Langenfeld/Jaden Alton and NO. 3 doubles Navleen Dosanjh/Alessia Manetti.
Caitlin Morrow defeated Kate Blumenfeld at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Sidney Pham (6-1, 6-4), Maryn Peterson (6-3, 6-1) and No. 1 doubles Amber Garza/Simran Dosanjh (6-3, 6-0) also contributed to the overall sweep.
WATER POLO
Kimball 15, Sierra 9
The Timberwolves were blanked in the second period while visiting Kimball raced to a 9-3 halftime lead.
Mitch Van Zwaluwenburg paced Sierra with five goals, scoring three of his team’s four in the third quarter. Lyndi Mortenson, Erfan Ballew and Lauren Ellis added one apiece.
McKay Keller netted seven goals for the Jaguars of Tracy.
