Sierra drops VOL match with Oakdale

The Sierra Timberwolves had an opportunity to take a stride forward on the Valley Oak League golf scene, but Oakdale High had other intentions during Sierra’s 210-221 loss to the Mustangs Wednesday at Manteca Golf Course.

Sierra (3-2 VOL, 4-2 overall) came close, but could not keep pace with a blistering Oakdale unit that took sole possession of first-place with the win, coupled with the postponement of East Union’s match with Central Valley.

Drew Allen turned in Sierra’s low round and tied Austin Whitworth of Oakdale for medalist honors with a 38. Miguel Dominguez followed Allen with a 40, while Paul Michaeleto and Ryan Leasure shot 46 and 48, respectively.

Kasey Milam turned in a 49 and Chase Hunter was the Timberwolves’ throw-out score with a 56. Oakdale freshman Ian Stogdell came in behind Whitworth with a 41.

“The difference today was in the experience,” Sierra head coach Jeff Williams said. “We have four kids right now who haven’t played yet and they’re going to get better as we go.

“There is always room for improvement and we have room to improve, which is encouraging.”

Sonora 217, Manteca 257
SONORA – The Buffaloes ran into a solid Sonora team on its home-digs and the result was one sided in the Wildcats league win Wednesday.

Manteca (2-3) was led by Nick Gonzales who was a stroke off medalist honors with a 5-over-par 41 at Mountain Springs Golf Course. Gonzales made the most of his round on hole No.4, sinking his second shot for an impressive eagle.

“Nick is getting better and he wants to get better,” Manteca head coach Dave Fontanilla said. “He really is playing pretty well and reaping all the benefits of his hard work.”

Kenny Summers came in behind Gonzales with a 47, while teammate Casey Benson shot a 50. Chris Pinpin shot a 58 and Tim Baker turned in a 60.

Sonora was led by Michael Sturgis’ round of 40.

Weston Ranch 197, Lathrop 319
FRENCH CAMP – The Cougars were all business at French Camp Golf Course Wednesday, cruising to the VOL win with relative ease.

Joel Keough paced the club with a 2-under-par 30, while Ryan Ortiz finished with a 35. Joseph Renaud shot a 43 and Tim Weatherwax finished his round in 44 shots.

James Aragon rounded out the card with a 45, while Thomas Medeiros’ 57 was the Cougars throw out score. Jay Butler led Lathrop with a 59, while teammates Kenneth Deguzman and Cory Baker shot 61’s.
