Sierra freshman Kaitlyn Rausa rolled past three opponents Wednesday to earn a spot in today’s Valley Oak League Singles Tournament finals at Manteca High.

She’ll face off with No. 1-seeded Tay Talamantes, who beat No. 2 Rausa twice in the regular season. Weather permitting, the final-round match is scheduled to start at 10:30 or 11 a.m. and will run simultaneously with the doubles tournament. The singles initially event rained out on Tuesday.

After a first-round bye, Rausa started her day with an 8-0 shutout of Oakdale’s Carley Newbill. She then defeated No. 7 Jaskirat Kaur of Weston Ranch 6-2, 6-1 before vanquishing Manteca’s Koryn Menasco, 6-3, 6-1.

Menasco was the surprise performer of the day. The sixth-seeded player toppled Central Catholic’s Katie Minato 8-0, then upset East Union’s Fuko Inoue, seeded third, 6-4, 6-4.

On the other side of the bracket, Sierra senior Claire Banks had her bid for a second straight final-round appearance halted by Talamentes 1-6, 1-6 in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Banks defeated Lathrop’s Kimberly Victoria 8-1 and No. 5 Taylor Corona of Manteca, 6-3, 6-2.

Julia Tang, an unseeded player who plays No. 3 singles for Manteca, reached the quarterfinals after beating No. 8 Maxine Jaque of Kimball, 8-4.

All semifinalists from both tournaments earn spots on the All-Valley Oak League team, and finalists get berths to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament set for Nov. 6-7 at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
