Sierra shines at Bella Vista Invitational

FOLSOM – Sierra High made the most of its trip to Folsom, leaving with three top-5 finishes in the 20-plus team Belle Vista Invitational at Willow Hills Course.

Both the varsity boys and girls closed out the invitational with fourth place overall finishes, while the sophomore boys team finished with a meet championship.

“We were pleased,” Sierra coach Anthony Chapman said. “Obviously we felt that we could have done a little bit better, but we just came off a really tight league race on Wednesday, so we knew we’d be a little bit tired and a little bit sore.”

Sierra got strong outings from sophomores Johnny Payan (eighth place) and James Grier (14th place) who finished in the top-10 overall. The varsity girls were led by Francis Scherry (36th) and Jessica Montiel (39th) who were top-40 finishers.

Ricky Morris (11th) and John Bowers (17th) paced the varsity boys.

Sierra got a glimpse of the course that will help decide its season outcome, because Folsom will host the Sac-Joaquin Section meet again this season.

“It was a good meet for us to get some experience on that course,’ Chapman said. “We also got a look at the other teams that are good in the section. So for our boys and girls to get first place, it looks pretty good for where we want to finish at up there for sections.”
