Squires sprint past Ceres

CERES — After a slow start, the East Union High sophomore girls basketball team outscored Ceres 25-5 in the middle two quarters en route to a 39-19 victory Tuesday.

The win for East Union (7-2, 12-7 overall) sets up a big Valley Oak League showdown with undefeated Sonora Thursday at home.

Alison Telles led the way with 15 points, Kelsey Emerson chipped in eight and Kristen Piasecki added six.

Sonora 33, Sierra 18
At Sierra, the host Timberwolves struggled to keep their composure on the offensive end where they committed 31 turnovers.

Kelly Paredes and Alison Armstrong had six points apiece, and Onyx Malone pulled down five rebounds.

East Union 33, Ceres 20
CERES — Alyssa Gonigan poured in 12 points, and Alex Scopas contributed eight to help East Union improve to 8-1 in the VOL and 18-2 overall.

Sonora 35, Sierra 19
Asia Cortez accounted for most of Sierra’s offense with 12 points in the loss.

Brenda Padilla ripped down 13 rebounds and picked up seven steals to go with four points. Valerie Nester turned in three points and 11 boards.

Cassidy Knowles scored 12 points to lead Sonora.
