VOLLEYBALL: Playoff-bound Sierra splits doubleheader

Sierra split a doubleheader Tuesday when it hosted Valley Oak League co-leading Central Catholic and cross-town rival East Union.

The Timberwolves were swept by Central Catholic 12-25, 20-25, 18-25 but quickly rebounded to dispatch East Union, 25-13, 25-17, 25-16.

Sierra ended its challenging regular season with a 7-5 record (9-7 overall) which is good for a top-four finish in the VOL and a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth.

East Union (1-9, 2-15) has two more matches left. The Lancers head to Kimball tonight and welcome co-leading Manteca on Thursday. They were led by Mariela Navarro’s three kills and four blocks on Tuesday. Donnese Payne added seven blocks and two kills. Meritiana Luani racked up 16 digs, while Isabel Ugalino turned in 15 assists and two aces.

Lathrop 3, Los Banos 2

It was a long night for the Spartans on Monday, but they made the trip to Los Banos worth it with a 7-25, 23-25, 25-9, 25-14, 15-8 come-from-behind victory.

Krystle Sakay’s double-double production of 12 kills and 17 digs led Lathrop in this Western Athletic Conference marathon. Alaba Olaleye accumulated 16 kills and seven digs, and LaNicia Ellis blasted 12 kills to go with two blocks. Camila De La Garza delivered 45 assists, eight digs and three kills. Thracylie Acoba and Lylliana Avila paced the defense with 20 and 14 digs, respectively. Azul Maldonado chipped in six kills, five digs and two aces.

 

JV volleyball

Lathrop 2, Los Banos 0

Elizabeth Andrade registered nine kills and 10 digs in the Spartans’ 25-17, 25-19 sweep.

Janessa Ward contributed eight kills, Celeste Narvarez had 10 digs and three aces and Julia Roaquin handed out 21 assists to go with three digs and two aces. Zy’Ryah Mageo added four kills, and Mailynn Lindsey had five digs and three aces.

 

Frosh volleyball

Los Banos 2, Lathrop 1

Lathrop was defeated 23-25, 29-27, 6-15 despite Zoe Cejas’ team-high 20 digs.

Sara Valadez finished with six kills, Genesis Contreras added nine digs and three aces and Anabelle Obasuyi chimed in with two kills and three blocks.
