Back in November, when the Valley Oak League wrestlers were beginning the opening stages of the season, it was common knowledge that Oakdale High would be the program in the league.

The best of the rest remained to be seen, and in the league’s final day of regular-season dual matches everything became clear.

Weston Ranch dispatched Manteca Unified rivals Lathrop High and Sierra on Jan. 26 to clinch a berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Duals Tournament with the No. 2 seed. Each team went into the double-dual with a 4-1 record.

The Cougars will join the top teams from the section at Lincoln High of Stockton today in a quest to finish the season as the top team in the Division-III bracket.

“We’ll be ready to wrestle,” Weston Ranch head coach Pat King said. “We know that we have a tough road ahead, but my kids will definitely be ready to compete.

“We’ve got a good group of guys, and they know what I expect.”

The trip will be King’s fourth to sections and the Cougars will likely open action against a talented Union Mine team.

Tournament action will begin at 10 a.m. with weigh-in’s coming at 8 a.m. Oakdale will likely be a favorite to win the Division-III title, which would represent the fourth for the Mustangs.
