Donut King rules on taste, price

When it’s time to make a donut run, I know my go-to place in Stockton – Donut King at 6323 Pacific Ave.

Sure, there’s that popular chain place just off Interstate 5 not to mention a few others in town.

But the shop in the Beverages & More shopping center attracts people from near and far.

“The best donuts in Stockton,” said Andrew, who is one of the locals.

He likes both the low prices and the friendly owners.

In this case, Sidney and Diane Wang are just that – friendly owners who usually will spend their entire day there.

They have their share of regulars, sipping on their regular cup of Joe freshly brewed from the Mr. Coffee maker. There’s nothing fancy here.

It’s interesting to note that Donut King’s next door neighbor is Sweat, a locally owned fitness facility. Talk about a juxtaposition.

Donut King also brings out a few curious sorts.

Take Joan from Los Angeles. She was little iffy about going into a place that also advertises teriyaki chicken rice bowls.

“I needed sweet snack to munch on before dropping my car off across the street to get washed and decided to take a gamble,” she said on Yelp.

It was on that website that she read her share of favorable reviews.

Joan was wowed by the donut holes.

“They were actually larger for donut holes – maybe the size of large golf balls,” she said.

Donut holes, by the way, are offered in glazed, crumb, cake and powdered sugar.

On my recent visit, I picked up a cake donut with chocolate icing and chopped peanuts along with a maple bar and a couple of donut holes. Too bad I didn’t get enough donuts to merit the old fashion pink boxes.

Speaking of maple bar, Meryl, a local, raved about it.

“I love the doughy taste of the maple bar – the maple glaze is not too sweet,” she said.

Her order also consisted of rainbow sprinkled chocolate, sugar and glazed donuts.

“The rainbow sprinkled chocolate is my favorite because it is dense, slightly crisp at the edges but still soft as the rest of the donut,” Meryl said. “I usually come by when I get off work in the morning when everything is really fresh.”

Donut King opens bright and early on weekdays – 4 o’clock, Mondays through Fridays – and 5 on weekends.
