RIPON – The Ripon High Class of 2009 was known for its occasional pranks.
That’s according to salutatorian Ashley McCoy, who made reference about the Chrysler LeBaron spray-painted in bright green, including tires, and featuring the signatures of her classmates.
The sedan – in tow and parked directly in front of the gymnasium – greeted friends, family and special guests attending Wednesday’s commencement ceremony held in Stouffer Field.
“(As a prank) the green car with ‘Seniors 09’ was in front of the student store,” she said.
McCoy and valedictorian Abigail Van Vuren were the top academic students at Ripon High, leading the 197 candidates receiving their diplomas. Their efforts in the classroom were a culmination of the past four years.
“It didn’t seem long ago that we were going through freshmen orientation,” Van Vuren said.
She shared fond memories of her high school years with hopes that the best is still yet to come.
“It all starts now in this moment of time,” said Van Vuren in her speech.
Meanwhile, senior class President Samantha Robison remembered the unity among her classmates.
“There was this welcoming spirit about our class,” she told those in the jam-packed stadium.
Members of the Class of 2009 made their way from the North Gym to Stouffer Field, entering midfield with the playing of the processional tune, “Pomp and Circumstance.”
The RHS Junior Reserve Training Corp presented the colors while seniors of the music ensemble class – Kaitlyn Allsup, Elizabeth Condon, Cielo Cruz, Carina Ibarra, Kallie Jacobs, Caryn Lake, Kiana Ontai and Sara Werning – performed the National Anthem.
Chelsie Leandro also performed, singing the Beatles’ tune, “In My Life.”
Lance Morrow, the first-year principal at RHS, had the honors of presenting the class, with diplomas distributed by school board members Donna Park, Larry Stewart, Ernie Tyhurst, Mike Fisher, and Jack DeLiddo.
The graduated departed with the playing of the recessional tune, “It’s a Beautiful Day.”
