The First Christian Reformed Church is expanding.

The Ripon Planning Commission approved an amendment to the existing conditional use permit Monday, paving the way for the church to add about 6,290 square feet of buildings to the campus at 305 W. Boesch Drive.

Plans call for a youth activity building (4,550 square feet) along with a classroom (1,180 square feet) and a storage building (560 square feet).

“The buildings will be designed to match the existing church,” said Planning Director Ken Zuidervaart, who noted at the monthly session that much-needed temporary classrooms will be placed on the site prior to construction of the project.

Modifications will also be made to the off-street parking facility, including a reduction of 30 parking spaces.

“The church currently exceeds the parking requirements per the City of Ripon parking standards for this use,” Zuidervaart said.

Even at that, the First Christian Reformed Church will still have 236 parking spaces, with the city’s requirements being 190 spaces.

The church, in addition, exceeds the city’s landscaping requirements of 15 percent. Even with the additions, the campus would still have about 23 percent landscaping, according to Zuidervaart.

Construction is scheduled to take place this summer and could possibly be completed by spring 2021.
