The Manteca Animal Shelter attained “no-kill” status for the first three months of 2022
That means at least 90 percent of the dogs turned in — or picked up and not claimed — were placed in forever homes or with rescue groups.
It is a major turnround from previous years when the city was only able to save 66 percent of the animals it handled.
Manteca Interim Police Chief Steve Schluer credited the turnaround to volunteers, the public participating in doggy days out, and staff.
The Manteca Animal Shelter earlier this year launched offers Dogs Day Out during business hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Dogs Day Out helps reduce kennel stress, enhances and sharpens a dog’s social skills by socializing with people which helps led to successful.
Schluer hopes to be able to secure an additional animal services officer position to allow fulltime coordination with rescue groups and such to help make sure the city can continue its “no-kill” status.
The city’s success caught the attention of Congressman Josh Harder who made it a point to laud the Manteca effort.
“I was so happy to hear we’ve been able to find good homes for these wonderful pets,” Harder said. “My wife Pam and I love fostering dogs and we see the endless love pets can give to a family. Full credit to the amazing folks at Manteca Animal Services and the shelter for working overtime to keep these precious dogs and cats alive. I strongly recommend everyone license their pets and consider fostering so we can keep our ‘no kill’ status.”
Harder’s recognition comes as he is co-sponsoring the Puppy Protection Act in Congress to set higher standards for dog dealers and crack down on abusive dog breeders.
Five of the seven animal shelters in San Joaquin County currently hold “no kill” status.
