A student that brought a BB gun to school prompted a lockdown Thursday morning at Golden West Elementary School on North Main Street.

Manteca Police responded immediately to the 8:52 a.m. call from the Golden West principal who advised law enforcement the school had received information of a student on campus t who was possibly in possession of a firearm.

The school made the decision to lock down in “an abundance of caution” to protect students, staff, and teachers from possible harm.

By the time officers arrived, the student in question had already been brought to the school office. During the course of the investigation a BB gun was located in the student’s possession. Although the recovered item was not an actual firearm, police said  “appeared very real both in appearance and weight.”

The student was cooperative when contacted by both school staff and police officers. There was no indication the student intended to use this BB gun and it appears it was poor judgement that prompted him to bring it to school.

Manteca police noted it is a crime to bring even a BB gun onto school grounds. Anyone bringing a weapon or other prohibited item onto a campus may be subject to arrest and /or may be disciplined by the school by being suspended or expelled.
