The longest running Christmas tradition in South San Joaquin County — the singing of Handel’s classic oratorio “Messiah” by the Ripon Oratorio — is scheduled for its 75th presentation on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. at the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church.
The presentation features singers not just from Ripon and Manteca but from nearby communities such as Escalon, Tracy, Turlock, and Modesto among other places.
Organizers are looking for newcomers to join the 75 year tradition that has become an annual experience for many people ushering in the beginning of the Christmas season.
Rehearsing for only four times seems a bit daunting to many newcomers, however most return the following years. Rehearsals begin at 3 p m, in the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church, 517 Orange Ave. in Ripon, on each Sunday afternoon in the month of November — 7, 14, 21 and 28.
There will be people in the back of church to usher singers to the appropriate section to sing (soprano, alto, tenor or bass). Sit in the middle of the section and be surrounded by the voices.
This year will mark 25 years for director Bob De Ruiter, and 14 years for pianist Barbara Viss.
Trumpeter Robert Stone has also accompanied for many years.
Singers in high school and older are welcome to participate.
Bring your "Messiah" score or they will have a few you can purchase.
