An early morning garage fire occurring shortly after midnight Monday caused an estimated $105,000 in damage to a Klondike Way home and to its contents.
Manteca Fire Battalion Chief Bob Davis said firefighters arrived on the scene east of Cottage and south of Louise avenues to find the structure in the 1600 block fully involved with several motor vehicles inside – one car being restored, tools and two motorcycles. The occupants were reportedly already outside of their home when firefighters arrived.
Twenty-four firemen with three engines, an aerial ladder truck and a mutual-aid engine from the Lathrop-Manteca Fire District were successful in stopping the fire before it could spread into the living areas of the home. A woman living in the residence said she heard noises and thought someone was in her home. She said she opened the garage door from the house and saw the flames and immediately closed the door and called 911.
Chief Davis said the emergency callback procedures were initiated and full-time firefighters came in from home as well as reserve firefighters who were called to the scene. The regular firemen staffed the stations and responded to several other emergencies within the city during the three-hour-long event, the battalion chief said.
Davis added that a strict adherence to city codes and ordinances assisted firefighters in containing the fire to the garage area as well as smoke detectors that had activated in the house.
