Ripon may expand public transit options

RIPON – A sign of growth for any community is the need for more public transportation.

Such is the case for the City of Ripon. Seniors, in particular, have difficulty getting around town with businesses such as Save Mart Shopping Center on one side of town and Bethany Home Convalescent, Bethany Manor Apartments and the Senior Center on the other side.

The City offers a Dial-A-Ride service – that’s primarily for those in need of rides to medical appointments or shopping in Modesto – using volunteer drivers and a city-owned vehicle.

The Ripon City Council is expected to accept a short range transit plan (SRTP) prepared by LSC Transportation Consultants, Inc. at tonight’s 7 o’clock meeting at City Hall, 259 N. Wilma.

The City retained the services of LSC in July 2008.

The consulting firm, in turn, evaluated the needs for transit services in Ripon, determining the most appropriate strategies in meeting those needs over a 10-year period.

The result of the SRTP also includes continuing the current Dial-A-Ride services and proposing a limited fixed route service that could include the Save Mart Shopping Center, Vintage Faire Mall, and Kaiser Hospital.

In addition, SRTP is a study consisting of demographics, transit needs, and opinions regarding transit based on a recent survey mailed and submitted by local residents .

In other agenda items, the elected officials will:

•Hear the presentation of the 2010 Annual Housing Report as submitted by Sheryl Prather, development specialist.

•Approve a resolution for the start of a Ripon Housing Authority, with Council members serving as commissioners and designating the first-ever interim chairman.
