A 30-year-old black man was gunned down late Tuesday night by someone in a “small white car” in the 1000 block of Virginia Avenue in south central area of Manteca.

It was one of two shootings in the city within three hours. While the first was reported at about 9:30 p.m. as a drive-by, the second occurred around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in the 300 block of Acacia Avenue where 15 to 20 shell casings were found, according to police. It has not been determined whether the second was actually a drive-by or someone just shooting up the street from the sidewalk position.

A small white car was caught on video last month in front of Las Casuelas Restaurant on West Yosemite Avenue at Winters Drive when shots were fired into the packed eatery where customers were celebrating the Cinco de Mayo holiday. Diners were showered with glass fragments but not one was severely injured.

Tuesday night’s shooting victim that police located on the Virginia Avenue sidewalk was wounded three times on the left side of his body, according to police public information officer Jason Hensley.

The man was taken into surgery at an area hospital and is reportedly listed in critical condition. No one was struck by gunfire in the second series of shots fired, Hensley said.

Details leading to the arrest or conviction of the responsible shooter or shooters may be given to the Manteca Police Department at (209) 456-8101 or turned in to the South County Crime Stoppers at (209) 823-4636. Callers may remain anonymous and receive a reward of up to $1,000.
