Sierra remains on the heels of first-place Manteca with a needed 7-2 win over visiting Oakdale at the Manteca Regional Tennis Center on Tuesday.
It was closely-contested, for the most part.
Previously-unbeaten Oakdale (4-1) got wins at No. 1 and 5 singles but dropped two three-set doubles matches. Tay Talamentes defeated Sierra freshman Kaitlin Rausa 7-5, 6-0 in the battle of 1s. Maddie Brewer outlasted Carly Cunial 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 for the Mustangs’ other point.
“We didn’t know too much about them going in, but Oakdale’s pretty tough,” Sierra coach Ed Melfort said.
Valley Oak League Singles Tournament runner-up Claire Banks resumed her dominance from the No. 2 spot, routing Carley Newbill 6-1, 6-0. Nadia Petrovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles, No. 4 Katarina Malabanan held off Haley Takaki 7-5, 7-6 (1) and No. 6 Sydney Huynh also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Louis Hunter and Alyssa Patterson posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Taryn Lane and Shannon Yang in the No. 1 doubles match. With the team win already secured, Sierra’s No. 2 and 3 tandems — Krista Harris/Alejandra Pacheco and Diana Duenas/Natlie Rootesart — grinded out 6-7, 6-0, 10-8 and 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 wins, respectively.
Manteca 9, Lathrop 0
The Buffaloes (5-0 VOL, 7-1 overall) were without their top player Taylor Corona, who was out with an injury.
And it didn’t matter.
Koryn Menasco (6-2, 6-3), Julia Tang (6-1, 6-3), Stephanie Mercado (6-0, 6-0), Gladis Sandoval (6-1, 6-1), Makenna Condit (6-2, 6-2) and Rav Dhillon (6-1, 6-0) dominated despite playing up a spot. Dhillon usually plays doubles.
Navina Mann/Prerna Singh (6-1, 6-3), Julianne Eavenson/Noeli Mercado (6-0, 6-0) and freshmen Melissa Poncini/Martha Avila (6-1, 6-2) won the doubles matches.
Kimball 5, East Union 4
East Union (1-4) nearly pulled out its second win of the season.
Fuko Ihoue defeated Maxine Jaque 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Cynthia Civil swept Shreya Ravi 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. The Lancers’ also got wins from No. 1 doubles Marilyn Civil/Hailey Gosney (6-4, 6-3) and No. 2 Nicole Meza/Leighani Sablan (6-4, 2-6, 6-2).
The big win for Kimball came at No. 3 singles, as Tiffany Dequit edged out East Union’s Mandi Weberg, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
