ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Bryson Davis, Manteca football
AOW Bryson Davis

Down two scores after the first quarter, the Buffaloes were not going to go away from doing what they do best last Friday in Folsom.

They countered Vista del Lago’s quick-striking air assault with time-consuming drives headed by their 6-oot-1, 220-pound tank at running back. Davis accounted for 36 of his team’s 67 carries, grinding out 342 yards (9.5 per carry) and four touchdowns in the process.

Vista del Lago quarterback John Koett (12 of 18, 363 yards, five TDs) found Matt Long (six receptions, 228 yards, four TDs) early and often, as the host Eagles soared to a 21-7 lead.

Davis stole the show, helping the visiting Buffs battle back for a 28-28 halftime stalemate.

“What a phenomenal effort by Bryson,” Manteca coach Mark Varnum said. “Plan was to feed him the rock and he delivered big time. I’m excited to see what he can do this season.”

Davis was denied another touchdown after losing a fumble near the goal line in the third quarter. He made up for it with two TDs in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead 41-yard scamper with 1:31 remaining.

Manteca is back in action this Friday with its first home game of the season. It’s a rematch of last year’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship against Granite Bay.
