Lathrop surged to sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference last week by winning all three of its games, and its veteran guard played a big part in it.
Sunner averaged 20.3 points in the victories over Grace Davis (56-25), Beyer (69-51) and Johansen (53-51 in overtime).
It was in the Beyer game where she had her brightest moment, scoring 30 points while making eight 3s. Remarkably, it’s the second time she has scored 30 with eight field goals from long range, doing so in a 57-45 non-league win against Sonora on Dec. 13.
“Each game, I try to come out with as much intensity as I can,” Sunner said. “With those great shooting games, I just feel like I came out focused and had good warm-ups. I knew we were going to play some pretty hard games (last week), so I had to bring my best. My hard work in practices translates into the game.”
Sunner also burned Grace Davis for 18 points in limited action. In the nail-biter against Johansen, she struggled with her shot and settled for 13 points but still contributed 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
“When the shot is off, you just have to keep working,” Sunner said. “The defense doesn’t let up. You just have to keep hustling and getting those rebounds. My thing is hard work. When I work hard, the game just kind of comes to me. That’s where I was able to pick up the slack, was on rebounds.”
Sunner entered this week as the Spartans’ leading scorer with 14.5 points per game.
