CERES — Brock Swift pitched his second straight complete game, and the East Union High sophomore baseball team helped him out with a five-run third inning to beat Ceres 6-3 Tuesday.

The Squires improved to 10-3 in the Valley Oak League (13-6 overall) to remain two games back of first-place Oakdale.

Zac Carrillo and Robert Thompson each hammered two-run base hits in the third inning. Josh Bonds plated two runs, but it was otherwise a quiet day at the plate for EU.

“It was  a well-played game,” East Union coach Mike James said. “Ceres had a really good pitcher and kept us handcuffed. He did a really nice job and I have to give him credit.

“We did enough to win. Brock pitched through a rough seventh inning and really showed intestinal fortitude.”

CERES — Shaun Nash was in on every goal for East Union (5-6-1), as she scored twice and assisted three others.

Jagjeet Dhillon chimed in with two goals, while Nadia Castillo had one of her own. Kendra Kaiserman and Gagenpreet Kaur contributed with an assist apiece.

Goalkeeper Nicole Whalen had one of the big highlights of the day, stuffing a penalty-kick opportunity.

OAKDALE — Oakdale secured the outright VOL championship after racing out to three goals in the first half.

Amara Michealis punched in the Buffaloes’ lone goal in the second half and was assisted by Esmeraldo Cuecna.
