Ceres Beck too much for Buffs to handle

CERES – Jamie Beck, a 6-foot, 2-inch junior, is leading a Ceres volleyball reawakening this season and Manteca was on the opposite end of her hard-hitting wrath Wednesday in a 0-3 (16-25, 22-25, 22-25) road loss.

The setback was especially frustrating for Manteca head coach Tim Horning because the Buffaloes handled the Bulldogs in two games Saturday in the Golden Valley Tournament.

While Beck was a force at net, the loss came down to inconsistency in the Buffaloes’ game.

“Ceres has quite a weapon (in Beck),” Horning said. “She’s tall and athletically skilled, and we battled, but we had too many mistakes to keep up with them.”

Davina Bennett finished with 14 assists, and Abby Rosas turned in four aces and seven digs.

Cynthia Perez sent home five kills.

“We battled back in Game 1, and 2 and 3,” Horning said. “But every time we made a mistake, it was right back to the drawing board.

“Ceres is stepping it up this year, credit to them, but hopefully we can play them much better the next time around.”

Manteca (0-1 Valley Oak League, 7-5 overall) begins a busy week Monday in Weston Ranch.

EU travels to Winter Gym Wednesday and Sonora looms Thursday.

Jimi Guibor had three kills and two blocks, and Mia Ramirez turned in five kills, seven service points and four aces.

Jessica Reeder helped on 14 assists, and Breanne Hatfield had 11 service points and four aces.

Manteca (0-1 VOL, 3-2 overall) heads to Weston Ranch Monday.

Oakdale 3, Lathrop 0

Despite the lopsided nature of the 7-25, 13-25, 10-25 loss, Lathrop head coach Angela Cuellar was happy with her team’s performance against the senior-laden Mustangs.

“As hard as Oakdale is (to face), our entire team played phenomenally,” Cuellar said. “We dug out their shots, we blocked. We played our hearts out, it just didn’t go our way tonight.”

Lathrop (0-2 VOL, 2-5 overall) hosts Central Valley Monday.

The Spartans head to Sonora Wednesday.

The Lancers put up quite the fight until Game 5 when everything turned sour in a 17-25, 26-24, 27-25, 22-25, 2-15 loss.

Taylor Maruca had 10 assists, and Carmen Haro helped on nine more.

Morgan Hulsebosch turned in two aces, Courtney Palmer had five digs, and Amber Abidi sent home seven kills.

“Brittany LaMar stepped up and played well,” EU head coach Eryn Bowers said. “The girls were battling it out, but when Game 5 came, they just weren’t moving the ball.”
