CROSS COUNTRY: Ripon varsity girls take 2nd in Frogtown invite

Annie Wild finished fifth in the Frogtown Invitational varsity girls small-school division Saturday, leading Ripon to a second-place team finish at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.

The Indians scored 69 points and were runners-up to Oakdale (28). Ripon’s boys team took fourth among varsity small schools with 145 points. Oakdale also claimed the varsity boys title with 48 points. Manteca, Sierra, Lathrop and Ripon Christian were other local schools represented at the meet in Angels Camp.

Wild completed the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 15.97 seconds. Manteca sophomore Sienna Jones joined her in the top 10, placing eighth in 20:59.03. Ripon freshman Malia Locarnini took ninth in 21:17.56. Ripon Christian’s Maya De Jong finished in 23:11.63 for 31st place. Other notable Ripon runners were Leah VanDorst (35th, 23:34.70), Joselin Figueroa (37th, 23:45.99) and Asia Rose (45th, 25:05.40). Lathrop’s Neftali Soto Aguilar was 51st in 25:25.74.

Ripon’s boys were paced by sophomore Omar Alsaidi, who was 11th in 17:18.99. Teammates Valente Hernandez followed suit (23rd, 18:39.50) along with Tristan Anderson finished in (35th, 19:06.89). Sierra was highlighted by Nicholas Corona Velazquez (28th, 18:51.15) and Brendan Alson (44th, 19:32.55). Nathan Puck of Lathrop took 37th in 19:16.83.

In the lower-level competitions, Sierra’s boys and Ripon’s girls took third in frosh-soph. Tristan Crowe spearheaded Sierra with a fifth-place finish in 13:00.06 on the 2.1-mile course. Brady Alves (16th, 13:41.15) and Ernesto Pacheco (23rd, 13:54.41) were also top contributors for the Timberwolves. Manteca’s Aiden Both took 27th (14:06.95).

Kiana Kutch led area frosh-soph girls runners in eighth place (15:30.38). Mallory Govia took 10th (15:58.23) for Ripon. Manteca’s Jordyn Hegarty finished in 22nd (17:03.93), and Ripon Christian’s took 27th (17:30.91).

Ripon fielded a JV boys team, which placed ninth. Freshman James Wilkins was the top individual in 26th (21:02.17).
