RIPON – The Ripon High girls varsity basketball squad unleashed its defense against visiting Hughson, resulting in a 43-20 Trans Valley League victory on Monday.

“We got points off turnovers – that’s been our M.O. all year,” said Indians coach George Contente.

Ripon (8-1, 19-4) was led by Kendra Contente, who finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Megan Morias chipped in with nine points.

Ruth Waters and Alissa Vickers had eight and six, respectively.

“We really didn’t have a good shooting night,” Contente said.

His team came out of the opening period leading, 7-5, and had enough to build up an 18-12 advantage at the intermission.

The Indians went on a 9-2 run in the third, stretching their lead to 27-14 at the top of the fourth.

“We not only created turnovers but we also made changes (to our defense),” said Contente.

Hughson (6-3, 12-10) was led by Addie Garza, who netted nine points.

Ripon will travel to Modesto Christian on Thursday for a tough TVL showdown.

The Indians are looking to avenge last month’s 56-28 loss to the first-place Crusaders.

Mikaela Alger had 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Knights past visiting Denair in the Southern League contest.

Kaylie Colyn helped out with nine points.

“Kaylie was all over the place,” said RC coach Ed Mulder of the 5-foot-7 sophomore. “She attacked the rim.”

The Knights, who led 16-12 after the opening period, began to pull away in the second quarter to claim a 32-18 half-time advantage.

Denair made a modest run in the second half, trimming the deficit to 13 thanks to a couple of 3-point baskets.

With the win, Ripon Christian (10-1, 16-5) remained in second place in the Southern League.

The Knights will have a chance to better their fortune at Turlock Christian on Thursday.

The first-place Eagles (10-0) handed Ripon Christian its only Southern League loss several weeks ago, beating the Knights, 59-45.

The first-place Knights took care of business at home on Monday, rolling to another lopsided Southern League victory at the expense of Denair.

Ripon Christian (11-0) used a balanced attack spearheaded by Cassidy De Rousse, who enjoyed a game-high 14 points and eight rebounds.

Kirstin Bowman had 10 points and seven boards.

“Eleven of our 13 players scored tonight,” said RC coach Pam Bowman.

The Knights sailed to a 39-6 first-half lead, and had a rather sizeable advantage midway through the second half to force a running clock.

Ripon Christian has three games left and could have enough wins by the end of this week to claim the Southern League crown.
