STOCKTON — And then there were three.
Twenty local boys and girls began competition Friday in the two-day Sac Joaquin Section Wrestling Championships at the Stockton Arena and when day was done just three remained to compete today, and all three of those are in the consolation bracket.
Sierra’s Alyanna Loaiza (121 pounds) is the lone girls competitor and will need to win her match with Alanna Harwell of St. Mary’s to advance to the CIF State Championships.
Loaiza went 2-1 with a first-round pin.
“It feels good,” Loaiza said. “I wouldn’t be here without my dad and my family.
“He is the one that believed in me the most and got me to this point. I just want to get to state for him and with him.”
East Union’s Jesse Moe (160) went 3-1 with two pins and must defeat Kimball’s Fazal Mohammad and then win the next match for a Top-6 finish and a ticket to state.
Moe shot out to an early lead over Bella Vista’s Nathan Gregory and held on for a 10-7 decision to advance to today.
“I was pretty tired going into the third period from all the matches today,” Moe said. “But I knew I was winning and had to keep fighting but I didn’t want to get turned.
“He got a tilt on me but that was it.”
Ripon’s Liam Ferris (285) went 2-1 with a two pins and like Moe, must win his first match today plus one more to go to state. Ferris opens with Armijo’s Kendrick Salcido.
“Getting a pin is vindicating,” Ferris said. “It shows that you put in hard work.
“And no matter what happens you fought hard. There’s nothing else you can do to get that same feeling.”
Competition resumes this morning at 9 at the Stockton Arena.
