Three of the seven local athletes to make the 106th California Interscholastic Federation State Championships are returning to Veterans Memorial Stadium today for the finals.

Riley Gier skipped his graduation at Lathrop on Friday to run the 800-meter trials, and he’s coming back along with Sierra junior Blama Kamara and Manteca junior Raniya Nelson. Kamara advanced in the 400, while Nelson came up with a clutch throw on her final attempt in the discus move on.

Heat winners and nine total in sprint and hurdles events qualify for day 2, while 12 get through for the 800, 1,600 and field events.

Gier clocked the eighth fastest time at 1 minute, 52.48 seconds in a competitive 800 field. Less than 2 seconds separates top-seeded Alden Morales (1:51.41) of Serra in Gardena and No. 12 Lucas Barbou-des-Places (1:53.24) of Los Altos. Gier’s time is his second-fastest of the season after recording program record 1:52.02 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Finals last week.

Kamara also came up just shy of his own school record. He was the runner-up of his heat in the 400, turning in the sixth best time overall at 47.54 seconds. His personal best time of 47.40 seconds was set at Masters.

Nelson surpassed her own school record set last week, doing so in dramatic fashion. After scratching her first try in the discus and slinging it 117 feet, 9 inches on her second she made her final opportunity count with a whopping 147-01 mark — good for fourth best heading into the finals. Her previous best was 146-03.

Fellow Manteca junior William Brown competed in both hurdles events and also broke his own school record, but a missed a spot in the finals. He posted a personal record 38.02-second time in the 300 hurdles for the 12th-fastest time after finishing 19th in the 110 at 14.72.

College-bound seniors Jackson Fay and Clara Schoolland made their second state appearances on Friday.

Fay graduated from East Union on Thursday and is headed to UC Davis for football. He took 20th in the 100-meter prelims in 10.65.

Ripon’s Schoolland will continue her track career at Concordia. A finalist in the high jump as a sophomore, she no-heighted in her return to Clovis.

Sierra junior Tyleah Badea rounds out the state qualifiers from the area. She finished 28th in the 800 in 2:13.95.

Action resumes at Veterans Memorial Stadium with field events starting at 4:30 p.m. today, while track events begin with the girls 4x100 relay at 5:45.
