Manteca High’s boys soccer team got a sneak peak of a potential postseason opponent down the road, but if Tuesday’s non-league match with Central Valley is any indication the Buffaloes have a ways to go.

The Hawks of Ceres made easy work of the home team at Guss Schmiedt Field, winning 7-0. Standout Daniel Ochoa helped Central Valley stake a 4-0 halftime lead by scoring three goals on three attempts.

“They really didn’t have a crazy amount of shots, they just capitalized when they got the opportunities,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said.

Manteca (0-2), which lost to Modesto 3-1 in its season opener last Friday, had its chances in the first half, but otherwise couldn’t match Central Valley’s quick-paced play.

“There were glimpses of us moving the ball around here and there where we connected six or seven passes,” Coenenberg said. “We created some opportunities we just didn’t finish.”

Central Valley is just that good.

With talent everywhere on the pitch, the Hawks moved the ball with skill and precision and put together some good-looking scoring sequences. There’s a reason why they’ve advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV playoff finals the last two seasons.

“I try to put together a tough preseason to get us ready for league,” Coenenberg said. “It’s nice to win games in the preseason, but our goal is to win more games in league. We hope it makes us a better team by challenging us.”

Manteca heads to Ripon (0-5) today in a battle of winless squads.

Stagg 5, Weston Ranch 1

At Weston Ranch, Victor Trejo scored the Cougars’ lone goal, which tied the score at 1 in the first half, on an assist from sophomore Robert Cisneros. It was all Stagg after that.

“I put in our second team late in the second half,” Weston Ranch coach Carlos Gaspar said. “I just wanted to play everybody today. You have to know where to put guys on the field, that’s what the preseason is about.”

Up next is Franklin on the road.

Turlock 4, East Union 1

The Lancers kicked off the season against a Division-I powerhouse at home Monday.

Miguel Barbosa finished off a free-kick sequence started by Alfredo Solorzano for East Union’s first goal, which closed EU in 2-1 in the final minute of the opening half.

Today, the Lancers host Franklin of Elk Grove at 5:30 p.m.

“I don’t mind us losing these (non-league) games primarily because it’s a learning experience, and secondly because we’re playing Division-I teams. I like for us to play larger schools for the experience and the exposure to good competition.”
