Manteca holds off game Weston Ranch

STOCKTON — Weston Ranch got Manteca’s attention by taking the second set, but the Buffaloes got back on track with a dominant third en route to a 25-21, 22-25, 25-7, 25-22 victory in the Valley Oak League opener.

Sophomore outside hitter Payton Reis had the hot hand for Manteca (1-0 VOL, 4-1 overall), as she rapped out 17 kills to go with 17 service points, four aces and seven digs. 

Setter Kaitlyn Morenzone added 23 assists along with 18 service points, five of which went for aces. Kacy Bolding also chipped in 14 points, five aces, nine kills, nine assists and seven digs. Destanie Elliot and Rhiannon Genilla added seven kills apiece to the attack, and Tawny  Deerinck collected nine digs to pace the back row.

Weston Ranch (0-1, 1-3) was led by Amaya Finley’s 14 kills. Nayeli Moreno handed out 17 digs, and Sharline Barut turned in five digs.

“Manteca is a really good team,” Weston Ranch coach Eddie Menzel said. “When they are playing well there’s not much they can’t do.  Our girls showed mental toughness by hanging in there and competing the way they did.”
