Weston Ranch junior Galadriel Mellion became the third athlete from her school to place at the California Interscholastic Federation Championships on Saturday.

She took sixth in the shot put and was a spot away from also medaling in the discus throw at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis. Also making it to the second day of the 102nd state meet were seniors Anthony Sausedo of Ripon and Jeontay Berry of Sierra.

Mellion joins Angell Mayfield (2009, hurdles) and John McDonald (2013, sprints) on the short list of Weston Ranch’s state placers. Her top mark in the shot put landed at 41 feet, 10 ½ inches, doing so on the second attempt of the preliminary round Saturday. That was good enough to advance to the final, but she fouled on her next three throws.

Feyo Olukanni of Clovis East won the shot put with a throw spanning 44 feet even. Mellion’s personal record is 44-2 ½. In the discus, she hit a 138-4 on her third overall attempt for seventh place. It’s her best mark of the season in the event, but well off her all-time best at 160-11 ½. Bear River’s Julia Pisenti claimed the sixth medal (143-11), and Nailea Fields of Caruthers (157-1) earned the state title.

Sausedo finished his remarkable season in the 300 hurdles. He missed his graduation Friday night to compete in the trials, clocking the sixth best time of 38.72 seconds. Sausedo improved his time Saturday (38.67) but placed seventh. Daryll Stevens of Jordan took sixth in 38.10, and Upland’s Delaney Crawford won in 37.11. Sausedo clocked a personal record of 38.26 in winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships.

Masters long jump runner-up Berry also did not attend his graduation Friday. The now-Sierra grad finished 11th on Saturday with a mark of 21-9 ½. Corna del Mar’s Jason Plumb took the gold with a leap of 24-5 ¾. Berry topped out at 22 8 ¾ on Friday for the 10th-best qualifying mark. His PR of 22-9 ¾ was set at Masters.

Springers Zion Allen of Manteca and Taylor Snaer of East Union are other state qualifiers from the Manteca area.
