MHS tennis takes sole possession of title

LATHROP — Manteca High’s girls tennis team has one more match to complete what has been a dominant run in the Valley Oak League.

On Wednesday, the Buffaloes stampeded Lathrop 9-0 to garner the outright championship, one day after shutting out Kimball to claim at least a share. They’ll go for a perfect finish today when they play host to second-place Oakdale.

Lathrop could only muster eight games against Manteca (13-0 VOL, 15-1 overall). Stephania Mercado and Rav Dhillon won 6-0, 6-0 in the Nos. 4 and 6 singles matches. Taylor Corona dispatched Kimberly Victoria 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles contest. Koryn Menasco (6-1, 6-1), Julia Tang (6-1, 6-0) and Makenna Condit (6-1, 6-0) also coasted to straight-set victories.

Prerna Singh and Navina Mann won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. No. 2 Julianne Eavenson and Noeli Mercado and No. 3 Melissa Poncini and Kaileeah Johansen both won 6-0, 6-0.

Kimball 3,

Sierra 1

After a rough start, the Timberwolves (0-12, 4-17) challenged Kimball (10-2, 14-14) the rest of the way in a 10-25, 25-22, 18-25, 20-25 loss.

Kayla Bolton racked up 19 assists, Genni Hammarstrom had 19 digs and Vanessa Benham led the front row with five kills and three blocks.

Freshman

Sierra 2, Kimball 1

Natalie Dias recorded seven kills, five aces and two blocks to help Sierra win prevail 25-19, 14-25, 15-12.

Stella Brierly dished out 13 assists.
